» Fiesta Tropical Mardi Gras Festivities

On a chilly Hollywood Saturday night in Downtown Hollywood hundreds of costumed revelers marched in bead-tossing krewes amongst thousands of adoring Mardi Gras celebrants. Twenty floats including our Miss Florida USA adopted float of Pegasus took to the streets at dusk as The 10th Annual Fiesta Tropical Parade had a distinctive pageant twist. Eight of our Miss Florida USA and Miss Florida Teen USA 2008 delegates were featured amongst the cannibals; gold people; marching samba bands and other celebrants of this G-rated family style celebration.

Then the delegates took to the festival part of the celebration and caught some great music as zydeco, jazz, blues and Grammy-winning Allen Toussaint were all featured in the five- day event. Erica Beltre, Miss Citrus USA; Angela Overton, Miss Oakland Park USA; Nataly Rosenberg, Miss Doral USA; Kelly Sax, Miss South Miami USA; Lindsay Shockey, Miss Broward County USA; and Jaclyn Walbroehl, Miss Broward County Fair.

Then Tuesday Miss Sunset Place USA Kimberly Anderson and Miss Southeast Florida USA Christian Ericksen took to the Hollywood Broadwalk for Fat Tuesday. One last hurrah before Ash Wednesday as stand-ups for the July Miss Florida USA broadcast was the main responsibility. But since they were in the beautiful surroundings how about a bengett on the beach? Happy Mardi Gras!

» In The Audience: Miss Southeast Florida USA:

Halavin Production made it’s third stop in Broward County as Miss Southeast Florida USA had a distinct Ft. Lauderdale feel. Set amongst the courtyard of The El Palacio Hotel in their Grand Ballroom the room was perfect for this tough competition. The Miss USA field had four former titleholders while the Teen USA field featured three “newbies” and that made for a pageantry that added a second round of interviews due to the close voting.

In the audience were several traveling titleholders and regional preliminary directors. All of Team Halavin 2008 was in attendance as was Miss Hollywood Teen USA Adriana Pedrique, Miss South Miami Teen USA Chelse Medly; Miss Oakland Park 2007 Angel Coleman; The Miss Homestead/FL Keys USA 2007 Team of Danyel Crocelius and Amy Diaz and Miss Hollywood 2007 Rachel Rose. It was also great seeing Miss Weston USA 2006 Rebecca Linnemon who came to root on pageant buddy Jennifer Olkininsky. Pageant Directors Glenda Byrd, Barbara Ewald and Jules Meyer were representing. Once again great job to The Halavin Family and their loyal volunteers who work so hard for their young ladies!

Miss Pedrique, Miss Medal, Ms. Overton and Miss Medley were front row VIP’s

» BEAUTY TIPS FROM HAWAII

Wise tips on looking good - Chanel Wise  by Nadine Kam
In her civilian life, she aspires to be a crime-scene investigator, and no, the "C.S.I." television series had nothing to do with it. She just enjoys solving puzzles and said she thinks it's pretty cool "to be a pageant girl but ready to kick someone's butt, too."

Here's a peek at the beauty regimen that won Chanel Wise the Miss Hawaii USA  title: Must-haves for the spotlight: Blotting powder, lip gloss, mascara, Arbonne's RE 9 Anti-aging eye cream, fake eyelashes

Beauty secret weapon: Arbonne RE 9 Anti-aging skin-care line

Emergency response tool: Arbonne RE 9 clay masque, for zits and other issues

Hair management: "I use every Paul Mitchell product there is. My favorite is the skinny serum that is perfect for those bad frizzy hair days."

Diet do's: Lots of water, chicken instead of pork or beef, brown rice instead of white, and lots of veggies

Diet don'ts: "I try to stay away from cheesecake ... my favorite dessert. I also stay away from greasy and oily foods."

Most likely to require touchup: Lipstick. "I always seem to somehow eat it off my lips!"

Regular workout regimen: Workout with a trainer three times a week and cardio exercises in between

Beauty philosophy: "Confidence is the key! Feeling beautiful about yourself inside will reflect in the eyes of other people."

» Kudos & Did You Knows:

- Kudos to Kimberly Anderson Miss Sunset Place USA and Catalina Arango Miss Sunset Place Teen USA for their participation in South Miami’s Black History Month Parade. It was also a celebration of the host cities 80th birthday as several floats and The South Miami High School Marching Band also joined the festivities in this celebration of diversity. Way to represent Kimberly and Catalina!

The first parade of the reign

Mayor Horace Feliu, Vice-Mayor Randy Wiscombe & State Representative Julio Robaina join their city commission colleagues along with Miss Anderson and Miss Arango for a day ending photo opportunity.

- Kudos to Miss Ormond Beach USA Erin McKinnon for hosting along with The Aqualounge in Daytona Beach a "Sponsorship Party."  The young womer were able to invite potential sponsors to the club and mingle and sign autographs to gain sponsorship money for the Miss Florida USA Pageant.  Not only was the Aqualounge generous with the use of their club, they also provided staff and refreshments to help get potential sponsors in a more giving mood. Way to help all of your sister Volusia County titleholders Erin & Kim!

- Kudos to Myriaha Musgrave, Miss Jacksonville Teen USA 2008, on her recent visit on President’s Day to Wolfson Children’s Hospital. A yearly tradition Miss Musgrave played, read and interacted with the children who were in the hospital during the long holiday. Way to brighter a gloomy day for those children Myriaha!

PICTURE OF THE WEEK!

Ok, we admit it! Our Picture of The Week Committee firmly believes in the revelry that is Mardi Gras. From New Orleans to Hollywood it’s a tradition that just goes well past all of us. So when our POTW nominees included this great shot of our Miss Oakland Park USA amongst the out of focus lights the artsy-ness of it all got the better of us. So here you have one Cajun inspired Picture of The Week.
