» Hollywood Helping Katrina’s Kids & Wilma’s Too! Telethon
One of the best charity events I have ever been involved in occurred last night at The Hollywood Beach Marriott as The City of Hollywood and The Miss Florida USA Family combined to raise over $151,000.00 at the first ever Hollywood Hurricane Telethon! It was truly a special night as the live televised telethon was broadcast on The Broward School Board Channel Becon Television. Hosted by Y-100’s Footy in The Morning; Miss Florida USA 2006 Cristin Duren; Miss Florida USA 2004 Kristen Berset; Miss Florida Teen USA 2006 Jennifer Wooten; The City of Hollywood’s Rene Jean and our Mayor of Hollywood Mara Giulianti it was an evening of crowns and stars.

Amongst the celebrity attendees were Loni Anderson; Florence Henderson; John Daly; Ed O’Ross (Six Feet Under); Dennis Cole; Bob Beamon and Tito Puente, Jr. Representing the pageant world was Miss Florida America Mari Wilensky; Mrs. Florida International Virginia Thornton; Miss Florida Teen USA 2004 Anastagia Pierre (thanks for volunteering also!) along with several preliminary titleholders and our Mrs. Florida America Marianne Oden.

It was an honor to direct and coordinate such a massive undertaking! As you may well know this event was rescheduled from October. Yes Wilma wiped out our Hurricane Katrina event as it was to take place four day’s after South Florida was devastated. So what did we do? Quit? No way! We picked ourselves up and rescheduled for Thursday. With the assistance of The City of Hollywood Staff it became bigger and better. Thank you to all who donated their time and services as all of the evening monies will go to both The New Orleans and Broward County Boys & Girls Clubs; Police Athletic Leagues and YMCA’s of the region.
