» Turning 'gothic band geek' into beauty queen Made for MTV

Geri Koeppel/The Arizona Republic

Duncan Robertson was stunned to get a call from MTV asking him to do a whopper of a makeover. A woman he had never met suggested the crew for the show Made call his business, Duncan Salon and Spa in Ahwatukee Foothills, to help transform a "Gothic band geek" into a beauty queen. The show takes teenagers who want to transform their lives into something else: A popular jock, for example, wants to become a figure skater. Or a nerd wants to become a football player. In this episode, Stephanie Scarim, 17, of Cottonwood, is shedding her baggy black pants, chains and metal spikes for sequins, swimsuits and 5-inch spiked heels. She's competing in the Miss Arizona Teen USA pageant this Saturday and Sunday at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix, and Duncan was in charge of giving her a new look that she can replicate on her own just before taking the stage. "It's very flattering," he said of being chosen.

Stacey Momeyer Kunnari, Miss Arizona 1997, is coaching Scarim and told the MTV crew to call Duncan. She was a fan of his "Makeover Emergency" segments on Fox 10 Arizona Morning that run on the first Monday of the month. "For me, it's a good step," Duncan said, "because it's a reality show and I'm working to get a show of my own, either a reality or makeover show."

Scarim hopes the exposure will lead to bigger things, too. "I've always been interested in modeling or working for charity," she said. "Growing up, I always watched the Miss Universe pageant on TV . . . and as I grew up I realized how active they were in charities, and I respect that." As the shoot began, Duncan kidded Scarim. "What you didn't know is, it's a double Made show," he said, "and six weeks ago I was a plumber and this is my final show, and boy, am I nervous." The Made episode should air in early 2006, but hasn't been scheduled yet, an MTV spokeswoman said.

» Georgia Pageant Contestant and Teacher Still Missing

Authorities are looking for an Ocilla high school teacher who has been missing for more than a week. Tara Grinstead, 30, was last seen on Oct. 22, said John Bankhead, spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

A recent portrait of Ms. Grinstead

She attended a pageant that day, had dinner with friends and went home around 11 p.m. When Grinstead did not show up for work, her car was found parked in the driveway of her house, which was locked. Her cellphone was at home and the only items missing were her purse and keys, Bankhead said. There were no signs of struggle, he added.

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-597-8477

» Kudos & Did You Knows

- This did you know comes from the website of KLAS-TV Las Vegas. Big news for Las Vegas -- it may become the site of the Miss America Pageant. The organization was released from its Atlantic City contract and sources tell Eyewitness News it is working on a contract with the Aladdin Hotel to bring the contest here in January. We also hear from our sources that negotiations with Baltimore to repeat as the host of Miss USA as ongoing.

- Kudos to Kelly Haffner who has been a frequent contestant in the North Florida USA qualifiers on her recent appearance in Pageantry Magazines Prom Feature out this month. Miss Haffner joins former Miss Florida Teen USA’s Mary Jeffords and Anastagia Pierre who have been featured. Enjoy the picture and way to go Kelly!

» Fashion Q&A
The Orlando Sentinel

Q: I heard that Dayanara Torres, a former Miss Universe from Puerto Rico, is modeling a new line of clothing for Wal-Mart. Do you know anything about this?

A: Wal-Mart has introduced a new line of trendier fashions called Metro 7, and has signed Torres, 31, to model for the line and promote it at public appearances. The line includes career and casual clothes, including silk camisoles, embroidered chiffon tunics, wrap sweaters, velvet skirts and blazers and a variety of denim items. Prices are slightly higher than most of the chain's clothing. For example, tank tops are $9.94; velvet blazers are $29.94.

The Metro 7 line is available in a number of Wal-Mart Supercenters and should be in most stores early next year. To purchase online and for store locations, visit walmart.com.
