Shannon, 24, was born in Boca Raton and returned to the area in May 2003 after graduating from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in finance and a minor in economics. "I came back here to decide what I wanted to do," she said. At the time, her parents lived here, but they have since moved to Cocoa Beach. Her love of South Florida is what brought Shannon back. "I love the weather," she said. "And I love the involvement. It's close to Miami and the Keys, so you can take a mini-vacation."

Ashley Shannon was recently crowned Miss Boca Raton.
The Junior League member said she entered the pageant
to become more involved in her community.
Her
main motivation for entering the pageant, she said, was community
involvement. She first became involved in Junior League, a nonprofit
organization, a little more than a year ago. "It's so
important," Shannon said of volunteering with Junior League and
in the community. "This is where you spend your time
living."
Since
moving back, Shannon started working at Tiffany & Co. Her first
job was in sales at the Palm Beach Gardens store, and she was recently
promoted to assistant operations manager at the Bal Harbor site.
"Professionally, it's a real nice track at Tiffany," she
said, adding that she is training for management.
Now,
Shannon is preparing to compete in the Miss Florida USA pageant, which
will air live locally from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 10. She has been
attending rehearsals in Hollywood, Fla., where the pageant is held. As
Miss Boca Raton USA, she will speak to the Rotary Club and work for a
cause, which she calls her platform. Shannon has chosen to volunteer
in the area of Alzheimer's. "My grandmother is in the early
stages of it," she said. "So, it's close to my heart."
As
for her recent title and her competition in the upcoming state
pageant, Shannon said she's excited. "You feel like you're famous
for a day," she said. "And the girls are real fun... I don't
really know what to expect (from Miss Florida), so it will be
interesting." One thing she does know, pageants aren't what
people think they are, she said. "It's not what it used to
be," she said. "It's a good way to get out in the community
and get involved."
