Miss Crawford always lends a helping hand

» Seniors treated like royals

Local beauty queen shares the fun parts of pageant life with senior citizens in an annual event.

Diana Crawford's philosophy is that every woman needs to be treated like a queen once in a while. After launching the Classical Queens salon-a-thon last year, the recently crowned 17-year-old Miss Teen Hollywood made this year's event at Sunrise Health and Rehabilitation Center bigger and more fun for nearly 40 senior citizens and their family and friends. ''I don't know how she thought of it, but she's not the usual beauty queen herself,'' said sister queen Miss Hollywood, Lindsay Shockey, 23. ``She makes them feel special.'' Diana, who lives in Davie and attends Western High School, produced an event comparable to her own experience on the pageant circuit. She supplied manicurists, hairdressers and makeup artists to make over senior citizens, then added a runway fashion show with children from the modeling and etiquette school Manners and More in Hollywood. She crowned the seniors with rhinestone tiaras and gave each senior a rose. Yvrose Saintil was activities director at HCR Manor Care in Plantation when Diana had the event there last year. Now activities director at Sunrise Health and Rehabilitation, Saintil brought Diana and her Queens event there this year. ''She did such a good job last year and was so professional that I just had to pull her over here when I accepted this position. It's such a unique concept,'' Saintil said.

Center resident Elydea Rodriguez, 67, said the manicures and makeup were fun, but watching the children perform was the best part. Singing Alicia Keyes' If I Ain't Got You, Melanie Chillaron, 13, astounded the audience with her rendition. She said her mother heard about the event at work, then contacted Diana.

''I also did this to encourage younger children to get involved in community events earlier,'' Diana said. She had members of the Greater Hollywood Jaycees help with costume changes and cueing entertainment. Diana, who also volunteers with the LoveJen Fund at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and the American Cancer Society, was touched to hear her project's success is spreading by word of mouth. ''I wanted to expand it because I think the older people really like to watch kids perform. I think it makes them happy,'' she said.

» Miss USA sports belle costume - Contestants wore garb to reflect national identity

Special to the Charlotte Observer

Miss USA introduced Thailand to her Southern roots Wednesday night as she took to the stage for the Miss Universe costume competition dressed as Scarlett O'Hara. Charlotte native Chelsea Cooley was cheered enthusiastically by the crowd as she folded her hands and combined the traditional Thai bow with a deep curtsey in her billowing green-and-white hoop skirt. The vintage Bob Mackie costume was originally worn in the 1970s by Carol Burnett for a skit on her comedy show. "I loved it, and I loved the history behind it and having it as a national costume and being from the South," Cooley said afterward. "I felt like a true Southern belle, and I know I was making my grandmother proud." Cooley, 21 and a graduate of Independence High School, is the first Miss North Carolina USA to become Miss USA and compete for Miss Universe.

All 81 Miss Universe contestants took part in Wednesday's show, which was televised nationally in Thailand. Miss Thailand, Chananporn Rosjan took home overall honors in the competition, which judged contestants based on originality and on the best representation of their homeland.

While the costume competition is a crowd favorite, it has no bearing on the overall Miss Universe competition. The costumes will be used again in the opening number for both the preliminary competition today and the Miss Universe finals, which will be broadcast live in America on Monday night.

Miss Universe on TV Miss Universe contest will be broadcast live from Thailand at 9 p.m. Monday on NBC
