» Miss Tourism World cancelled

Dwight McLean, who has been assisting with the preparations for sending Cayman's Amanda Henkis to Miss Tourism World, expressed disappointment at being told the beauty pageant, being held in South Africa, would not happen after all.

"We got the information that the pageant wasn't going ahead the day before Amanda was supposed to travel. She was literally packed and ready to head to the airport the next morning. Overall all the money that we spent went down the drain. The airline did not want to do a refund on the ticket that cost around CI $800."

The preparations for the pageant were also costly.

"The national costume cost CI $300, her wardrobe another CI $1000; hair, nails and makeup another CI$ 800 dollars. Amanda is devastated," he said.

"I will recommend Daniel Bodden (the Director of Miss Cayman Tourism World) not to send anyone there (to the international Miss Tourism World pageant), in future, because these are disorganized people, they could have given us more notice," he added.

Winner of Miss Cayman Tourism World Amanda Henkis, who was said to be 'devastated' at the news that she would not be traveling to Miss Tourism World in South Africa.

» Miss World Contestants Visit Wroclaw, Poland on Tour

On arrival at Wroclaw, the new home of the Miss World 2006 Poland Tour for the coming days, contestants were invited to the main town square where thousands of locals had assembled to welcome the girls. Wroclaw will host the contestants until 21st September. The highlight of the visit will be the Miss World 2006 Talent Show, on 20th September.

As a special greeting, children had prepared paintings representing each country participating in this year’s Miss World celebrations. Each girl was taken to the painting representing her country and invited to add her personal touches. All took the opportunity to have a chat with the young artists and to thank them personally for being made felt at home in their Polish city.

All paintings depicted a key aspect of the country. For example, South Africa was represented by the Big Five, the Netherlands by bulb fields, and Indonesia by an Orang Utan. Wales was illustrated by a fiery red dragon, Tanzania by the Kilimanjaro, and Guatemala by ancient Maya temples.

Aruba commented: “The artist really managed to bring across the spirit of my country, painting a beautiful sunset. It really makes me feel of home here in Wroclaw.” England added: “My painting depicted Big Ben amidst a string of English roses. It was very clever how the themes were brought together.”

Miss World contestants were then invited onto stage where in groups they sang well known classics such as ‘Fever’ and ‘Return to Sender’ alongside a local Polish band. Iceland was keen to get on stage: “When I heard Fever was one of the songs, I had to participate. It is one of my favourites,’ she said.

Mexico added: “Making music and having fun together is great. The people of Wroclaw have really gone to town to make us feel welcome.” People’s Republic of China agreed: “The people of Wroclaw are wonderful and very welcoming. I look forward to spending the next few days here.”

Kazakhstan was certainly taken in by the architecture and atmosphere of the town square: “This square is very beautiful with its colourful houses. I cannot wait to see the rest of this town.”

In the evening deputy mayor, Jaroslaw Obremski hosted an official reception at the historic town hall for the Miss World girls, who for the occasion had dressed up in their beautiful evening gowns. In his opening speech the deputy mayor told the girls: “during your stay in Wroclaw the town belongs to you.” The girls then enjoyed a sample of fine Polish food, before heading back to the hotel for their first night sleep in the town they now call home.

Miss New Hampshire USA & Teen USA

A Londonderry native was crowned Miss New Hampshire USA yesterday in a ceremony plush with pageantry and patriotism. Laura Silva, 19, said she did not expect to win the pageant since it was the first time she had participated in the event. "I'm so excited," Silva said. "I didn't think this would happen."

Silva, a sophomore at Plymouth State University, is studying marketing and hopes to work as an executive at a large corporation. Laura Silva, in picture seated, co-founded a dance team when she was a student at Londonderry High School.

She said was inspired to enter the Miss New Hampshire USA pageant by her older sister, Cara, who has spent eight years competing in the Miss New Hampshire program and is the reigning Miss Londonderry. "I kind of wanted to follow in her footsteps," Silva said.

She chose Miss New Hampshire USA because the program touts itself as a beauty pageant. She said she hopes her experience as the title-holder will help her realize her goal of becoming a model.

Both Silva and her sister are avid dancers. Laura Silva co-founded a dance team when she was a student at Londonderry High School and is looking forward to a second year on the dance team at Plymouth State.

The first runner-up was Natasha Furbish, a 19-year-old Gilford resident. Second runner-up was 19-year-old Megan Delaney of Manchester. The winners were selected on the basis of their performance in the evening wear and swimsuit competitions. Twenty women aged 18 to 27 from across the state competed in the pageant, which was held over the course of two days.

The final Miss New Hampshire USA pageant was held yesterday at the Wayfarer Quality Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Bedford. It was produced by Frank Sweeney. Representatives from the Air Force ROTC unit at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute also participated in the event, serving as escorts for the contestants during the evening wear portion of the program.

Children, It's Time For Recess - With Professor Murder

There are a ton of great albums coming out in the next week or so including new ones from folk faves Will Oldham and Joanna Newsom. However, we thought we'd spin you right round to check out new band Professor Murder. It's as far from folk as you can possibly grab.

While folk grabs you by the heart strings, Professor Murder smacks you in the face, makes you get a drink, while dragging your friends behind you to the dance floor. Professor Murder is straight up party music with an unusual sound that mixes dub and indie rock with a whistle blowing lead singer that will whip you into frenzy. On their EP, "Rides The Subway," you're going to find discombobulated grooves, tambourines, heavy bass drops and darling synths tripping over happy-time lyrics. It's fantastically loveable stuff. We really dig the almost mellow "Free Stress Test," which is the closest to indie rock that band ever comes with its syncopated percussion and catchy lyrics. The last minute of the song is genius with its poppy melody and the inclusion of a very 80s high hat. However, the song "Champion" catches us too, even though it's full of aggression, rough textures and synth blips we can't help but clap along too.

Next week, we'll probably tackle a musician who is making serious rock or heavy thought provoking acoustic guitar albums. Until then, just go play.

Guess who won this year's Mercury Prize? Not it wasn't Pulse faves Hot Chip but the Arctic Monkeys. The Monkeys have been one of the first indie rock outfits to make a fast ride from obscurity to super fame through...
