The Road to Hollywood has opened again as Miss Miami Tropics crowned three new titleholders and we say hello to the new pageant season. This week we also say goodbye to Michael Galanes and Citrus Productions. He leaves the Miss Florida USA family in pursuit of other opportunities and we wish him the best in his future endeavors, you will be missed!

Tracey Brown's latest pageant title -- 2008 Miss Idaho USA -- will land her on national TV on NBC. Brown, 21, who graduated from Post Falls High in 2004 and is attending Whitworth University in Spokane, earned the crown on Saturday at Jewett Auditorium at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.

"I was both shocked and honored when my name was announced as the winner," she said. "I had only decided to do the pageant a few weeks before the actual competition, so I was not expecting to win, but I'm thrilled. I entered the pageant on a whim and placed the outcome in God's hands. That allowed me to be at peace throughout the competition process and with whatever the outcome would be." Ten other women competed in the event for ages 18-27.

Brown will represent Idaho in the Miss USA pageant sponsored by NBC Universal and Donald Trump. The date has not been determined, but it will likely be held in early April, said David Van Marin, state director for Pageants Northwest. Brown will compete against 50 other winners from each state and Washington, D.C., in evening gown, swimsuit and interview competitions.

"Tracey is bright, a good public speaker and carries herself extremely well," Van Marin said. "It doesn't matter what the competition is, she carries herself in a way that's respectful but yet very confident."

Brown also represented Idaho at America's Junior Miss three years ago and Miss America two years ago. She is studying journalism and political science and is an intern at KXLY in Spokane. After graduation in May, Brown plans to pursue a career in TV news reporting.

As Miss Idaho 2006, Brown helped introduce an Idaho breast cancer awareness license plate during her year of service. She worked closely with the Idaho Transportation Department and lobbied the Legislature for the plates, which recently went on sale. They have a pink ribbon and read "Early Detection Saves Lives." Brown's mother, Debbie, is a six-year cancer survivor.

The Road to Hollywood started the long journey this past weekend and for the first time The Miss Miami Tropics Scholarship Pageant joins the list of qualifying pageants. The event saw a highly competitive afternoon of pageantry with competition in three divisions, Miss USA division; Miss Teen USA division and Junior Miss division. The Miami Merchandise Mart’s Sheraton Hotel Grand Ballroom hosted the seventh annual pageant and carries on the tradition in Florida’s magic city. An enthusiastic crowd came to cheer on the eleven Miss USA and ten Miss Teen USA delegates and five in the Junior Miss Tropics division.

The sell out crowd was greeted with lunch in the fashion show setting and then the pageant was on! With the delegates introducing themselves to the audience and judges. After the openings it was time to introduce our Mistress of Ceremonies, Miss Puerto Rico 2004 Desiree Sardo and Telemundo Network personality Alonso “Pancho” De Ada.

The Miami Teen USA delegates Interview Competition was onstage with a random question from the ceremonial fish bowl. The swimsuit competitions featured swimwear provided by Lan Designs Swimwear. Then it was everyone’s favorite The Evening Gown Competition was up next. Fashion was on display as the delegate competed in gowns of their own choosing. In between was a fifteen-minute intermission and then a fashion show of Bridal Wear followed the Evening Gown Competition.

After the fashion show was a special dance presentation in honor of the new partnership Miss Florida USA to the tune of “Born In The USA”. After the rousing dance number it was announced that Miami Tropic’s would be the directors for Miss Miami USA this upcoming spring. Look for more information in our upcoming ezine for specifics.

Congratulations also goes to the Miami Tropics Scholarship Pageant team led by Executive Producer Rose Martinez along with Pageant Director and daughter Desiree Sardo who ran one great show. Job well done! Now the Road To Hollywood ventures North on I-95 to Volusia County and The Daytona Beach USA Super Pageant this upcoming November.

Remember when the "Garden State"

album changed your life?

We've heard great things from our film department about the new dramedy "Dan in Real Life," but what really piqued our interest is its dreamy, guitar-happy soundtrack (which features cameos from A Fine Frenzy's Alison Sudol and Regina Spektor), courtesy of Norwegian singer-songwriter, Sondre Lerche. And that got us thinking about all of the amazing soundtracks we've collected over the past few years that you might have missed out on. Below a few of our favorite gems; check 'em out and thank us later!

When we went to a screening of Ethan Hawke's sophomore directorial effort, we sat smack in front of the soundtrack's composer, Grammy-award winning musician Jesse Harris. An all-star roster that includes Willie Nelson, Cat Power, M. Ward, Bright Eyes, The Black Keys and Feist performs his original ditties.

Michael Dowse's fictional biopic about a DJ who goes deaf swept our 2005 Gen Art Film Festival. A huge part of its success? A two-disc soundtrack that includes everyone from world-famous DJs like Lol Hammond and Carl Cox to old school rock acts like The Beach Boys.

If there was one thing that we loved even more than Mandy Moore's hair in this directorial debut effort from Justin Theroux, it was the Deerhoof-dominated soundtrack. Au Revoir Simone, who took us vintage shopping in Williamsburg a few months back, also make an appearance.

The Last Kiss
Zach Braff's second flick might not have warranted the cult-following of "Garden State," but the mellow soundtrack (which includes Gen Art easy-listening faves Joshua Radin, Cary Brothers, and Imogen Heap) does deserve your attention. The perfect make-out album.
