» Namibia: Stylish Beauty Crowned Miss Namibia

Elegant 21-year-old Marelize Robberts from Windhoek was on Saturday night crowned Miss Namibia 2008 at a glittering beauty ceremony. The first princess is 19-year-old Leani Roux and Kimera Markowitz-Karuuombe was voted second princess.

Robberts who beat other nine contestants was awarded a Toyota Yaris car to use for one year, together with fuel, a safari at Etosha, a cell phone, a weekend at the Windhoek Country Club Resort & Casino, a camera, a return ticket to either Frankfurt or London, four return tickets to Cape Town or Johannesburg and six domestic flights, among other prizes. Robberts succeeded Marichen Luiperth who took the title last year.

Still dressed in their evening gowns whose color combination, material, design and the fitting showed off their slender bodies, the top five finalists were announced. They were Marelize Robberts, leani Roux, Kimera Markowitz-Karuuombe, Chuma Siboleka and Geraldine Goosen.

It was then time to showcase their calibre - one of the biggest attributes of the contest. The judges handed over their question papers to McLean and the top five one by one went through their answers. Simple as the questions sounded, adrenaline was busy at work as the contestants tried their level best to answer the posed questions.

Questions asked included: Is the Miss Namibia beauty pageant relevant? How do you explain to a tourist where Namibia is? What do you think corporate companies could do to alleviate poverty in the country? If you were to be crowned Miss Namibia, what charity work would you engage in and why? What three wishes do you have for Namibia?

The five handled their questions fairly well, so it was up to the judges. Then it was announced that the judges had made their final decision. Kimera Markowitz-Karuuombe was announced as second princess and Leani Roux as first. The annual event ended with a final announcement that Marelize Robberts is Miss Namibia 2008.

The organizing board of Miss Universe 2008 pageant has completed the working schedule for competitors from June 17 to July 14 in Vietnam.

On June 22, they will model traditional Vietnamese clothes, and on June 24, Vietnamese ao dai. These two events will be aired live.

In the central ancient town of Hoi An, 80 beauties will take part in a street parade on June 25.

In Hanoi, they will join a party called “Ambassadors’ Night”. They will go to Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province after that to take a boat trip and participate in a charity gift auction. During this tour, the NBC channel will shoot a 9-minute clip to advertise Vietnam.

Paper or Plastic?

And to think, it all started off with a chair...

Gen Art film program alums the Duplass Brothers rarely do anything the "normal" way. That's why they've become the poster boys for a do-it-yourself indie film movement known as mumblecore. It's also why their latest flick, "Baghead," a hilarious pseudo-thriller about a bunch of actors shooting a low budget horror movie in the woods, is opening tomorrow in Austin, Texas. Yep, you read that correctly, exclusively in Austin. Why? Because that's the town where these boys went to school, plugged into the emerging filmmaker scene and made their first successful short, "This is John," which played Sundance in 2003.

Suddenly the brothers were in business.

Two additional shorts, "Scrapple" and "The Intervention," quickly followed, and in turn, their first feature, "The Puffy Chair," which screened at Gen Art, won the Audience Award at the 2005 SXSW Film Festival, garnered two Independent Spirit Awards noms and was an official selection at Sundance that year. Not too shabby for a road trip movie with such a quirky premise; as Jay Duplass has said, "It's [a movie] about people in their late 20's searching for love, and a big purple Lazyboy."

But enough about that big purple chair. The new film is about what Mark Duplass calls, "the funny, horrific, tragic, terrible life of being a desperate actor." As the name belies, the plot involves a man running around the woods with a paper bag on his head, scaring the bejesus out of people—in a way that is silly and terrifying all at once. The finished product—which like all of the Dupes' projects to date, features no celebrities, big budgets or large crews—feels polished for something created on the fly: "Our method is just that you do what you would normally do in this situation, and we record it. If we want you to do something different, we'll tell you."

Lucky for us, it seems like no matter how successful this duo becomes, they keep delivering more of the same far from normal but totally delightful indie fare. And if we ever want them to do something different (aka, join this www.sonyclassics.com/baghead for updates.
