THE ROAD TO MISS USA UPDATE:

Miss Michigan USA Reaches Her Dreams

On The Road To Baltimore

By JOHN PEPIN, Journal Staff Writer

(reprint courtesy of THE MINING JOURNAL www.miningjournal.net)

MARQUETTE - David Hayes remembers when his then pre-teen daughter Crystal first revealed her aspirations to become Miss Michigan USA. She said, 'I'm going to be Miss Michigan someday,' and that was at 10 or 12," Hayes said. "And she was very reclusive then. She wouldn't even talk to people."

But Crystal, a former Miss Upper Peninsula who was crowned Miss Michigan USA on her 20th birthday in Port Huron recently, said she learned to overcome her shyness. "One day, it just hit me - I can't wait for the world to come to me," she said. "I have to be able to talk to other people."

Once she began competing in pageants, Crystal said she had no more problems being introverted. "It gets you over a lot when you have to stand in front of hundreds of people in a swimsuit," she said. Now, the Rock, Michigan native Is making public appearances, raising funds for her trip to Baltimore next April to compete in the Miss USA competition. She's also drawing awareness to breast and ovarian cancer research, with part of her contributions being donated there.

Friday, Crystal's busy schedule included three radio interviews, two television interviews, taping a talk show and holding a reception to meet the public at the Holiday Inn in Marquette. Deanna VanAbel, who was crowned Miss Marquette Township in 1986, brought her 1-year-old daughter Ella to meet Crystal. At Ella's age, she doesn't understand pageants. "But she likes her crown and she likes her princesses," Deanna said. Wearing a tiara on her tiny head, Ella posed for a photo with Crystal. "I thought this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for her (Ella) to meet her (Crystal)," Deanna said.

Posing for photos and signing autographs, Crystal said she has found public appearances fun to do. She likes meeting people. Crystal's mom Lenore said the judges made a great choice in choosing Miss Michigan. "They couldn't have picked a better person," Lenore said. "I know her as a mother and as a friend and she will do the best job she can to fill those shoes. She's genuine."

Lenore said she thinks competing in pageants and fund-raising have helped Crystal build self-confidence. Crystal, a cosmetologist at Salon Marzejon with a strong interest in the arts, hopes to become a model over the next five years. But before that, there's the Miss USA pageant. For that, she said her experiences working to become Miss Michigan have helped greatly. "God gave me this drive to do it, and I always knew it was going to happen," Crystal said.
