PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

» Shequita is 2005 Miss Marianas Universe

Saipan Tribune: Monday, October 17, 2005
Eighteen-year-old Shequita L. Bennett is the 2005 Miss Marianas Universe after winning the hearts and minds of judges with her beauty, wit, and confidence during the pageant’s coronation Saturday night at the World Resort Saipan. Bennett clinched the tiara when she gamely answered host Chris Nelson’s question “What should a young woman in the CNMI strive for?” by saying that she would settle for nothing less than to become the first female governor of the islands.

2005 Miss Marianas Universe Shequita L. Bennett is joined on stage by,

from left, 2004 Miss Teen CNMI Divana Dela Cruz, candidates Mary Louise Deleon Guerrero, Lucielle Hocog, Maile Rae San Nicolas, Almadine Dela Cruz Taitano,

and Michelle Jose. Also in the photo are Little Miss Marianas Kaylin Celis and Little Miss Marianas Princess Adreen Adriano. (Marconi Calindas)

She further got the crowd up on their feet and cheering for her when she ended her statement by saying, in a matter of fact way, that women have more people skills than men. Bennett is the daughter of Board of Education teacher representative and Kagman High School teacher Ambrose Bennett. The young lass broke into tears when her name was proclaimed as this year’s titleholder. She immediately dedicated her triumph to both her parents, especially to her mother. “She’s been there for everything,” she said, adding that she would hug her mother tightly after the pageant. Her dad said he was speechless after her daughter won but showed the media a pin on his coat that said “Dad” and he was indeed one proud father Saturday night.

Aside from taking home the Miss Marianas Universe crown, Bennett also almost swept the special awards. She bested five other equally deserving candidates for the Leadership award, National Costume award, Photogenic, Swimsuit and Eveningwear. She said all those awards were pleasant surprises for her and she thanked her designer and mentor Irwin Jamisola and the people of Genoveva’s Salon for her victory. First runner-up of the competition went to crowd favorite Maile Rae B. San Nicolas, who was asked “If she were to pass a bill into law what would be the bill and why?” She said she would start a girls and boys club in the CNMI, an organization to improve the status of the local youth for them to start a good relationship with the community. She also won the Achievement award. Her confidence in answering the question notwithstanding, Bennett said she did not expect to win at all during a media briefing following the coronation. “I’m just here to have fun and I can’t believe I did it.” When asked about the most challenging portion of the pageant, Bennett said the question and answer segment was, hands down, the hardest.

Bennett will represent the CNMI in the 2006 Miss Universe to be held in China and the 2006 Miss International in Japan. Among Bennett’s prizes are a crown, trophy, sash, flowers, scholarship worth $1,000, $1,000 cash prize, a 24-karat white gold, handcrafted Miss Marianas Universe 2005 gold chain and pendant. She also received an all-expense paid travel opportunity to compete in the international pageants courtesy of Northwest Airlines. Panel of judges last Saturday were Northwest Airlines general manager for Guam Richard Parson, Theresa Kim, Eric Plinske, Antonia Blanco and Ruby Hamilton. Official tabulator for the pageant was NMC Director of Finance and Procurement Raaj Kuripati.
Former Miss CNMI International 1998 Sonya Pangelinan-Danco co-hosted the event held in the Diamond Hall of the Susupe hotel.

MISS FL USA NEWS!

» A NOTE FROM MISS SOUTHWEST FLORIDA USA:

Hello all!!

I just wanted to say how happy I am to now be a part of Miss FL USA family as a director. As announced last week, Tracye Kearney and I will be heading up the Ft Myers/Naples area. Tracye has a background in production as she used to work on the Nickelodeon set. In addition, we co directed the Miss Offshore Beauty Pageant together this past spring. Of course, I am a die-hard pageant attendee since birth it seems. I have competed since I was 5 and growing up I used to have "mock" pageants in my living room with the neighborhood girls and custom designed puffy painted sashes. LOL! So...I guess you can say I have been preparing for this for years!!

We are so excited and are in the process of locking down a venue. The pageant will take place in late February or March. In addition, I am currently working to have the website up and running as soon as possible.

We are also very hard at work for sponsors and so far so good!!! In addition to winning the title and competing at state, we have secured photo shoots for the winners with International photographer Seth Barlow, as well as a spot on Southwest FL Outdoors, a weekly TV show that airs on FOX and Florida Sports Net.....AND MUCH MORE PENDING!!! We have both resided in SW FL for most of our lives and are using our resources to the fullest to make this a SPECTACULAR event for EVERYONE. Please feel free to email us with any suggestions and or help from contestants, directors. etc.

I just wanted to say hello and give a little more information since our website is not up yet. Again, we are so excited to join the Miss Florida USA prelim system. I look forward to a great year and wish everyone the best =)

» HANDS ON MIAMI DAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:

Hi everyone! I'm participating in an event in Miami in a couple of weeks, and I thought I'd see if anyone else would like to join in the fun. The event is called Hands On Miami Day, and it's November 5th from 7:30 to 12:30. You can read all the details at www.handsonmiami.com, but it's basically a huge (3000 + people) community revitilization project all around Miami. Our "team" will be assigned a project (examples include painting, planting, etc.), and we'll meet at Bayside (downtown Miami) to be bused to our location. I know it's an early start, but it only takes a few hours, and I thought we could all do lunch and/or the beach afterward. I've already received responses from a couple of other "old" pageant girls, so it should be a really fun group. If anyone from Broward or farther would like to come, there is plenty of room at my condo for Friday night (it's literally 10 minutes from the event).

If you'd like to join "Team Diva," please let me know asap so I can get all the registrations completed. I'll need your name, address, phone, and T-shirt size. Hope to see you there!

» New Miss Wyoming USA represents state

By JOHN MORGAN/Casper Star-Tribune staff writer

This year's Miss Wyoming USA has lived here her whole life and wouldn't have it any other way."I'm where I feel like I'm meant to be," said Kristin George, 23, of Casper. "Everything I do is because it feels like what's right. I do what I want and I'm happy with who I am." After graduating with honors from Kelly Walsh High School, she earned two associate's degrees from Casper College in psychology and paralegal studies and then earned two bachelor's degrees from the University of Wyoming's Casper College program in psychology and social sciences. Since graduating from college, she quickly landed a job as a pharmaceutical representative for a major drug company and drives around the northern part of the state informing area doctors about her company's products. Her motivation at work has helped her quickly gain attention and experience.

But George doesn't think she's exceptional for a Miss Wyoming. "Miss Wyomings are women of the state who achieve a lot, do a lot, and get good grades," she said. "A lot of people don't have time for us, but women nowadays are playing a more prominent role."

George herself is hard to ignore. At 5 foot 6, she's "one inch too short for the runway," but she does have a professional modeling contract with the Donna Baldwin Talent agency in Denver and has appeared in print advertisements in the Denver Post. Her looks haven't gone to her head though; she still blushes when complimented.

Brenda Bosco, a teacher at Ft. Caspar Academy, has known George for four years and said she is outgoing, independent, honest and comfortable with herself. "She always wants to be out front and leading in whatever she does," Bosco said. "She's very caring when it comes to her family and friends and is a very giving person. She'll always share what she has with others. "I don't think Kristin's (long-term) goal was to win this pageant," Bosco said. "She hasn't been thinking about it all year. I think she only decided in the last few months to go for it." George took first place at the Miss Wyoming USA pageant held Sept. 25 in Casper, the first time a Casper woman has won the title since 1988, but she's no stranger to pageants. She was Miss Wyoming Teen USA in 2000, and was twice the first runner up at Miss Wyoming pageants. The Miss Wyoming USA pageant is a great opportunity for confident young women, said Jamie Frick, a longtime family friend. "A lot of young women can model themselves after Kristin and look up to her," she said. Frick calls Kristin "an incredibly generous young woman, with her finances, resources and time." "Of all my friends, I'm most thankful to have her in my life," she said. "Kristin has always been there for me. Sometimes she's a shoulder to cry on. She doesn't judge people and understands my weaknesses and loves me for them."

Many speculate this is because the pageant relies heavily on ratings, explaining why finalists always seem to come from large states like Texas. George is considering writing Donald Trump and asking him to switch from using the state name banners to random numbers during the swimsuit and evening gown competition. Contestants are also judged on their personality during interviews. George says she does well during interviews because she is an open book. "I've always been the way I am," she said. "I didn't act any different (so I could become Miss Wyoming USA). I've done everything I wanted and I've done it by myself."

Currently she is juggling a demanding job, a new house in Casper, a new German shepherd puppy named Drake and a boyfriend. She is the daughter of Mike and Molly George of Casper and has two brothers. George volunteers at the Salvation Army, the Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, the Seton House and participates in the Adopt-a-Platoon program.

» Worland teen wins Miss Wyoming Teen USA

Casper Star-Tribune staff

The 2006 Miss Wyoming Teen USA Pageant took place September at John F. Walsh Auditorium at Natrona County High School. A capacity crowd filled the theater on Sunday evening for the pageant finals, where the panel of judges selected Katy Lambert of Worland as Miss Wyoming Teen USA 2006. She will now advance and compete live on NBC at the Miss Teen USA Pageant next year. Katy is a 17-year-old senior at Worland High School, where she is involved in cheerleading, band, gymnastics, Key Club, soccer and 4-H. She is the daughter of Christ and Andi Lange of Worland and Steve Lambert of Chandler, Ariz., and the granddaughter of Carol Roenigk of Worland and Jim Bricker of Ten Sleep.

Kalyn McNown of Wilson was first runner-up; Staci Kramer of Cheyenne was second runner-up; Holly Allen of Lander was third runner-up and Ashia Thomas of Pinedale was fourth runner-up. The Miss Universe Organization, producers of the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA competitions, is an international company that advances and supports today's women. These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals who participate in the competitions to advance their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.
