PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

» Terehe Pere, 21, crowned 46th Miss Tahiti

(Tahitipresse) - Twenty-one-year-old Terehe Pere, an Air Tahiti ticketing agent, was crowned the 46th Miss Tahiti Friday night during Tahiti's biggest and most prestigious yearly pageant. The native of Raiatea in the Leeward Islands was chosen the winner among 14 candidates during a contest televised live throughout French Polynesia from Place To'ata in downtown Papeete.

Raimata Agnieray, 18, a high school senior, is the first runner-up. Vairani Hoiore, 19, a second-year student at the University of French Polynesia, is the second runner-up. Teura Barff, 19, is the third runner-up. The new Miss Tahiti's first reaction was, "I hope that all (French) Polynesians are content with the choice that has just been made by the jury, and I will try to represent them the best I can during my year of reign."

Outgoing Miss Tahiti 2005 Mihimana Sachet crowned the new beauty queen immediately following the official announcement of her victory. Raipoe Adams, Miss Tahiti 2004 and fourth runner-up in the Miss France 2005 contest, headed up the jury, which also included Thérèse Moke, Miss Tahiti 1993, Rava Maiarii, Miss Tahiti 2002 and Kahia Lesage, first runner-up in the Miss Tahiti 2004 contest and second runner-up in the Miss Earth 2005 contest.

The 14 Miss Tahiti candidates made five appearances during the long night before the public and jury. "Before returning on stage, I was stressed, but the atmosphere that very quickly enveloped the candidates allowed me to have fun throughout the various appearances," Ms. Pere said after her victory. "The biggest moment during the election occurred when the result was announced," she said.

The new Miss Tahiti will participate in the Miss France 2007 contest scheduled for December in France. Ms. Agnieray, the first runner-up, will enter the Miss Earth contest in Chile. Second runner-up Ms. Hoiore will participate in the Miss Asia contest in the Philippines and third runner-up Ms. Barff will be a candidate in the Miss South Pacific contest in Tonga.

What In The World...? - Oh, Yeah. That's Spankrock.

We've been going on and on about the virtues of Spankrock to friends, strangers and even etching the message into granite for our unborn grandchildren. Here's our pitch: remember two years ago when everyone was frothing at the mouth over N.E.R.D? Yeah. It's better than that.

Spankrock is a loose collective of young men hailing from Baltimore who make music we can't begin to categorize. Their musical mashing is deadly and includes elements of dancehall, electro, hip-hop, jungle and unknown element "X" to top it all off. Take their single, "Rick Rubin". Any band that references one of the best producers of all time (Run DMC, Aerosmith, Jonny Cash, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) is already gold in our book. However, look further and you'll find raw, distorted beats, an enchanting MC! , and an Atari meets heavy bass line that has NYC music dilettantes loosing their already fragile minds. Check out their tour page, 'cause their live show is what really sets Spanrock apart - band members jumping into the crowd and spontaneous dancing is de riguer.

Their bands' debut album, YoYoYoYoYo just hit the shelves and will have you wondering, "Just what do I call this sound?" Don't think too hard about it. Just dance.

Added bonus - watch a video from Spankrock's live show at this year's SXSW festival in Austin.
