» Miss Carnavale Miami USA February 26, 2005

The Road To Hollywood went aquatic this past weekend as the crown ventured to international waters as Discovery Cruise Lines hosted the 25th annual Miss Carnavale Miami Pageant. Hosted by Miss Florida USA alumni and 1994 Miss Carnavale Ivis Guerra and sponsored by The Little Havana Kiwanis this was one unique day of pageantry. Miss Carnavale Miami now has a Miss USA twist, as today’s winner will actually compete in Miss Florida USA 2007 while this years reigning titleholder Yazmin Navarro will compete in Hollywood this summer.

On the pool deck for the swimsuit competition

with contestant Ursula Fernandini.

Imagine a cruise and a pageant all in one! With well over 200 pageant attendees the cruise set sail Saturday morning early and the pageant was on! By 9:00am we were poolside as the contestants welcomed the enthusiastic crowd in some very colorful sports-ware. Then the morning’s session ended with all eleven delegates parading before the judges in swimwear of their own choosing. This years judging panel included our very own Miss Florida USA Melissa Witek; Miss Caranvale USA 2003 (and registered Miss Florida USA 2006 contestant) Melissa Hernandez; Miami public relations guru Liza Santana and Discovery Cruise Lines executive Raysa Lopez-Melis.

Nathalie Pozo competes in the evening gown phase

which was accompanied by an onstage interview

After an afternoon excursion to Freeport, Bahamas by the cast and crew it was time to regroup in the Tropical Show Room for the evening gown competition, this segment also included an onstage interview allow the audience and judges a chance to get to know the young ladies. The competition actually started the Monday night before with one on one interviews with the delegates and judges so this was a final recap for the judges and audience.

After a lovely buffet dinner it was time to head to the Crow’s Nest Disco for the final results. The eleven delegates were once again reintroduced and then the results were announced:

2nd Runner Up is Bertha Velazquez

1st Runner Up is Katharine Cue

Miss Carnavale USA 2007 is Nathalie Pozo!

Nathalie Pozo and Bertha Velazquez.

What a great pageant it was as The Little Havana Jaycees and their group of volunteers lead by pageant chairman Ricardo Gonzalez deserves a well earned congratulations on such a great production! Look for Miss Florida Teen USA alumni Ms. Pozo to lead the festivities of Carnavale Miami and Calle Ocho this year. Congratulations to Ms. Navarro as she heads to state in Hollywood after such a great reign in this hugely popular traditional Miami pageant. Up next we are back on dry land and heading to West Broward for next weeks Miss Pembroke Pines USA this next Saturday Night.

THE ROAD TO MISS USA

MISS MICHIGAN USA GOES TO BALTIMORE

By Jenny Lancour

ROCK - Small town girl Crystal Hayes says she's going all the way to be Miss USA. "I'm just excited that I get my chance. I'm giving 100 percent," said Hayes, Miss Michigan USA at a send-off celebration given in her honor in Rock on Saturday. Hayes, 20, a Rock native, was crowned Miss Michigan USA last September. She will be competing for Miss USA 2005 on April 11 at the Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore, Md.

"It's gonna be a lot of fun just to be on stage. I've dreamt about it since I was five," she said. "I'm looking forward to just the experience and the contacts you can make. You just never know who you could meet."  Having energy and showing people that you are genuine are the two biggest factors in being successful, she said. Being from a small town, has helped her be true to herself and others. "I won't forget where I came from," she said. "I consider myself a Yooper and a small town girl. I have good standards. I treat everybody I meet the same. I don't consider myself superficial. I feel real."

As a winner already, Hayes said she sees herself as a role model for others who want to fulfill their dreams. "I think of how many little girls are out there that think they could actually be Miss Michigan. I'm so blessed to be 20 and have met my biggest goal." Her new goal, just six weeks away, won't come easy. Between now and pageant time, Hayes says she has a busy schedule. She plans to keep two steps ahead of the game so she doesn't spread herself too thin but keeps relaxed and stays well.

Between public appearances and her busy training schedule, she tends to get less sleep than she needs. She knows this can weaken her immune system. Being around so many people is a concern so she has to stay healthy.
