» TRAIN KILLS DEAF BEAUTY QUEEN

Died after being struck by a train in the US state of Texas.

Miss Deaf Texas, Tara Rose McAvoy, 18, who was deaf from birth, was hit by the train in Austin on Monday. The train continued to sound its horn right up to the accident, a witness told a local television station. The Texas Association of the Deaf had been appealing for funds to help send Ms McAvoy to the national deaf pageant in California in July.

The state pageant director, Laura Loeb-Hill, told the Associated Press news agency on Monday that Ms McAvoy had represented the state "with dignity and pride". Ms McAvoy had started at Gallaudet University in Washington in January but had returned to Texas, Ms Loeb-Hill said.

Pray To The Indie Rock Gods - Or, Just Be Destroyer

Question: How do you become an indie rock star? Answer: Be a member of the rock band New Pornographers, be willing to take musical risks, work tirelessly, make seven solo albums and have that last one be amazing, but then... You would be Dan Bejar a.k.a Destroyer - a rising indie star.

Destroyer is considered folk, but sounds more like gentle rock. Using lyrics and competiting melodies, his latest work is full of all the contradiction of human emotional behavior: cynicism versus hope, hate versus love, etc. The album also contains elements of pop; a genre he usually distances himself from. It's nice, as it makes singing along to Bejar's dramatic voice a real possibility. However, note that some of his wandering tendencies remain. An example is the song, "Rubies" - a nine-minute anguished poem. A little too liberal art college for us, but those into the drifting 60s sound, will be thrilled. "Painter In Your Pocket" is our champion tune with a melody that swerves from joy to despair and back again.

Overall, the album is complex and just may drive you crazy if you've got it on as background noise. Instead, we recommend you get your hands on some absinthe, run a bath and really listen to Destroyer's Rubies. There's magic in them there tunes.
