» WORLD PAGEANT NEWS: Miss Canada crowned Miss Universe

Grant Peck - Canadian Press

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Canada's entry for this year's Miss Universe contest, Natalie Glebova, carried off the winner's tiara in Bangkok on Tuesday, narrowly beating a strong contingent from beauty-pageant-crazy Latin America. The 23-year-old Torontonian, who emigrated from Russia 11 years ago, was considered a favourite but appeared surprised after judges picked her over runner-up Cynthia Olavarria of Puerto Rico. "I feel like this is happening too fast and it's unreal," Glebova, wearing a long white dress, told reporters after she was crowned. "It's just starting to sink in." The motivational speaker, who inherits the title from Australia's Jennifer Hawkins, said she would spend the next year trying to raise awareness and money for the battle against AIDS. Behind Glebova and Olavarria in the field of 81 contestants was Renata Sone of the Dominican Republic, Laura Elizondo of Mexico and Monica Spear of Venezuela.

Thailand, through an unusual public-private consortium, bid to host the event as a way of promoting its tourism industry, paying a reported 265 million baht ($6.5 million US) licensing fee to the Miss Universe Organization -- a partnership between Donald Trump and American television network NBC. The effort gained urgency and poignancy after the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunami, which ripped through prime tourist beach areas in Thailand and claimed at least 5,300 lives, including more than 2,200 foreign tourists. During the run-up to Tuesday's final, the Miss Universe contestants travelled to the devastated island of Phuket, whose crucial tourism business has been slow to recover. Cheerier Thai motifs were displayed during the show itself. But it was all business for the contest's 12 judges -- a mix of second-tier international celebrities, a Danish model, a star chef and some show-business executives. All 81 contestants were at Tuesday's final, although the race had been narrowed to 15. Their ranks were winnowed further in three rounds -- evening gowns, swimsuits and "final questions."  All the contenders showed similar poise and presence in their gowns and swimsuits. But with crisp efficiency, the judges narrowed the field to a final five, posing each with a random question.

Glebova, who studies information technology management at Toronto's Ryerson University, was on solid ground. She was asked what she considered her life's biggest challenge. "I'm the kind of person who looks at the glass as half full," she said. "I always try to maintain a positive outlook on life." Minutes later, she was crowned Miss Universe 2005 in front of a crowd that included her parents. Speaking later to reporters, she recalled her origins. Although now "Canadian at heart," she was born in Tuapse, a small town on the Black Sea in southwestern Russian, and emigrated to Canada 11 years ago with her parents. "Immigration is a wonderful thing," she said. "It gives people an opportunity to start a new life!" Canada had embraced her as one of its own, she added -- not neglecting to give a big "hello" to Russia. Asked what she thought she could accomplish with her new status, she said she'll attend fundraising events for HIV and AIDS causes, describing it as a privilege to raise money and awareness for the issue.

» Miss Kissimmee USA & Miss Kissimmee Teen USA (May 28, 2005)

The Road To Hollywood visited Osceola County for the first time in four years as the inaugural Miss Kissimmee USA & Miss Kissimmee Teen USA Pageants took place at the spectacular Gaylord Palms Resort and Hotel. Hosted by Mrs. Florida America Michele Morland the two titles were a part of the Mrs. Florida America contest that made the afternoon a true pageant tripleheader. The show started with the delegates in swimwear for their introductions to Outkasts “Hay Yeah!” and then it was time for the pageant to begin!

The traditional competitions onstage continued the afternoon as one or two-piece  swimwear was followed by Evening Gowns of the delegates choosing were the order of the afternoon. The order for the day was Miss Kissimmee USA delegates first, then Miss Kissimmee Teen USA delegates followed by The Mrs. Florida America delegates who had both their preliminary pageant and finals on the same day.

The judges for the afternoon were: Bruce Dunn, Emmy award winning television director; Pinky Barber, marketing executive and Mrs. Florida 1980; Matthew Theodoro, model, actor and talent booker; Dr. Carl D. Thosedone, dentist and Survivor Africa contestant; Loren Bakerman, marketing director of Aura Spa; Dr. Wanda,  and Mary Lee Knead, Spa owner and operator.

» Miss Daytona Beach USA & Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA (May 29, 2005)

The Road To Hollywood officially closed Sunday night as the final title of the season took place at The Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center hosted this year’s Miss Daytona Beach USA & Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA Pageants. Hosted by Daytona Beach pageant luminaries Venus Day and Liz Miller the crowd was very rowdy and enthusiastic the entire evening. Then Ormond Beach Mayor Fred Costello greeted the audience and proclaimed the competition has begun as the contestants were called onstage.

The light’s dimmed to signal the start of the evening as the entire cast along with choreographer/dancer and Miss Miami Teen USA Kendra Waller began the evening with a high energy dance number that the delegates practiced all week. The delegates began the evening in blue jeans and black solid tops along with tennis shoes!

The five Miss USA and twelve Miss Teen USA delegates then introduced themselves with their self-introductions. After a quick set change to bring in dinning room chairs and a lovely table it was the onstage interview competition. Beginning with Ms. Day interviewing the Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA delegates and then Ms. Miller interviewing the Miss Daytona Beach USA delegates. The questions came from the delegates themselves and allowed the opportunity to see the ladies “dance on their feet” with impromptu responses from the questions.

After a great vocal performance from 14 year-old Michaela Rose it was time for the swimwear competition. The curtains dropped as the sounds of a car engine started the familiar sounds of the classic dance track “Car Wash”. The Miss Daytona Beach USA delegates paraded in front of the curtains with car wash signs and as soon as the curtains were raised our bikinied “car wash attendants” danced amid a car wash set complete with a real sports call. The delegates were giving high five’s and “faux” car washing as the competition took place. The audience loved it and the girls were having a blast. The competition ended with a swimsuit comparison segment.

Up next was the evening gown competition complete with a lighted park landscape for the Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA delegates. Then after a set change to a living room scene it was time for the Miss Daytona Beach USA delegates to compete. Before each delegate would arrive at the “door” to start the competition our male escort would change the picture to the next competitor! After each delegate rebuffed an invitation by the escort the next delegate was at the door. The audience thought it was hilarious!

After a brief intermission and another vocal performance by Miss Rose it was time to narrow the field down to the top five in the teen division and a top three in the Miss USA division. The delegates were first called in pursuit of Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA and they were: Chelsi Bedell; Jessica Anselmo; Jennifer Hernandez; Karly Trevithick and Erin Winters. The Miss Daytona Beach USA finalists were Oyebimpe Oyewale; Meg Perkins and Miranda Weber.

The finalists then were asked one more time to think on their feet as Ms. Day asked one last onstage question as Miss Waller assisted with the bowl of delegate questions. Then it was time to bring out the entire cast for the first awards of the evening that would qualify these young ladies for state:

Pageantry Magazine Spirit Award – Pranoo Kumar

Miss Amity: – Pranoo Kumar

Miss Photogenic: Miss USA – Oyebimpe Oyewale / Miss Teen USA – Emily Nelson

Then the results started with The Teen USA Division:

4th Runner Up is Karly Trevithick

3rd Runner Up is Jennifer Hernandez

2nd Runner Up is Jessica Anselmo

1st Runner Up is Chelsi Bedell

Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA 2006 is Erin Winters!

The it was time for The Miss USA Divisions results:

2nd Runner Up is Miranda Weber

1st Runner Up is Oyebime Oyewale

The New Miss Daytona Beach USA 2006 is Meg Perkins!

What a great pageant it was as The AFUSA Team outdid themselves with the fifth edition of Miss Daytona Beach USA! Congratulations to Kim Decker who deserves a well earned congratulations on leading such an outstanding effort. Also a big congratulation’s goes to Ms. Perkins and Miss Winters on their victories and entry to state in Hollywood!

Well that wraps up our Road to Hollywood 2006 edition. Up next is Miss Florida USA in a little over a month in Hollywood. Thank you contestants, parents, friends, coaches and most of all our fantastic team of directors for such a great pageant season! See everyone in Hollywood the second week of July and don’t forget the live broadcast special July 9th throughout the state and the world!
