PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD » Miss Rural Zim Gets Underway Zimbabwe Standard (Harare)  by Vusumuzi Sifile                                                                         MISS Rural Zimbabwe, a pageant that seeks to showcase beauty from the country's remote areas, has taken off on a high note with contestants battling it out in the provincial finals. The pageant will see rural beauties square up for the millions on offer. Finals to select the eventual winner have been penciled for 27 August in the resort town of Kariba, where 26 contestants from eight provinces will compete. Bulawayo and Harare provinces will not be represented as the pageant is strictly for rural girls. "The pageant is the first of its kind in Zimbabwe and we are doing everything possible to make it successful. Rural models have great potential but they can only realize that through support from stakeholders in the modeling industry," said Sipho Ncube-Mazibuko of Bulawayo based Strides modeling agency, the organizers of the event. Ncube-Mazibuko says her experience in last year's inaugural Miss Rural Strides enabled her to realize the potential of rural girls in the modeling industry. "Unlike their urban counterparts, rural models are original. They are into modeling for genuine reasons, not only to make money. They are full of passion and what is only needed is a professional to groom them and help them handle stage fright, and give them more interest to participate," she said.     One of the Miss Rural Zim delegates     Ncube-Mazibuko said they were hoping to make the contest a continental and later international event. "Five years from now we will be holding Miss Rural Africa, where rural models from different countries in the continent will compete. We hope by then we would have put in place all the relevant structures which will make it the biggest pageant on the continent," she added. Assembling models from all the provinces has been a hassle for Ncube-Mazibuko and her team. "Some of the districts are scattered and accessing all of them was very difficult. Some modeling agencies in these provinces were hostile as they felt rural modeling was a waste of time," she said. Strides Agency administers the regional finals in five provinces. In Masvingo and Mashonaland West provinces, license holders handle the pageant. In Mashonaland East, the pageant is under the auspices of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe. The pageant will be officially launched at a colorful ceremony in Harare on 13 August. The organizers have since struck a deal with a group of hotels where all their functions would be held. The prize money for the eventual winner is currently pegged at $10 million.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MISS FL USA NEWS! » MISS PALM BEACH COUNTY USA & MISS GOLD COAST USA TO MERGE:  It was announced on Wednesday that Miss Palm Beach County USA and Miss Gold Coast USA will merge and share a venue in next years 2007 Preliminary Pageant Season. The pageant will take place Saturday April 8th, 2006 at the Royal Palm Beach High School.  It will be run as one big event and with two (2) titles to be awarded in each division. It’s great to have both Glenda & Linda return for year two as this should be a great night of pageantry in Palm Beach County!       » LEADING LADIES ANNOUNCE THEIR PAGEANT PLANS:   OK...drum roll, please! We took many of your ideas, comments, suggestions, and we developed a plan for the upcoming Leading Lady Prelims.    We will hold ONE Leading Lady prelim this year and we plan to crown THREE queens (Miss Emerald Coast USA, Miss Tallahassee USA, and Miss FL Panhandle USA). All titles will be equal. The date will be December 3rd with the location TBA. Also, we'll be launching Leading Lady University in early 2006. This one weekend training conference will allow any delegate (current titleholder, at-large delegate, or prelim participant) to learn the secrets of the Leading Lady program. ROAD TO MISS USA Panama City resident  crowned Miss Florida USA Sheela Dominguez / sun-sentinel.com       Ms. Duren in the evening  gown competition    DAVIE, Fla.--Cristin Leigh Duren of Panama City won the Miss Florida USA Pageant before a capacity crowd at the 1100-seat Bailey Concert Hall in Broward Community College's Central Campus, in Davie. he Pageant was broadcast live Saturday, July 9, from 7–9 p.m. throughout Florida. The two-hour program was hosted by "Deco Drive" television personality Louis Aguirre. The reigning Miss Florida USA 2005, Melissa Witek, crowned the winning contestant.                                                                                                                         Miss Duren, 24, graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Public Relations and a Computer Sciences minor and works in pharmaceutical sales. Earlier this year she competed in and won the title of Miss Emerald Coast, a preliminary pageant. "I am so shacked and excited, I really didn't expect to really win. I was up against the cream of the crop, the top women who won or placed in preliminary pageants state-wide," said Duren, "It was really tough to balance my full-time job and prepare for this, but I had a lot of help and support from family and friends."     The Top 15 In Swimsuits   The first runner-up was Amanda Zitzman 19, a Communications student who represented Gainesville. Second runner-up was Yazmin Navarro of Miami, 20, who is studying Elementary Education at Florida International University. Third runner-up was Miss Jacksonville Sherry Leaf, a graphic artist who is completing her Associate's degree program at Florida Community College in Jacksonville. Fourth runner-up was Rosanna Lawrie of Tallahassee, 26, who recently graduated with a degree in Chemical Science/Biology and is preparing to enter medical school and serve as a cardiologist.
