PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

» Miss World pageant says adieu to China after three events

Beijing, Jan. 19 (PTI): After holding the Miss World pageant for three consecutive times in the tropical southern Chinese island province of Hainan, the organisers have moved the final venue of the 2006 edition to Poland. The final of Miss World 2006 beauty pageant will be held in the Polish capital Warsaw on September 30, the organizers said in a press statement. The pageant has been held in Sanya, a picturesque sea-side city in Hainan province for three consecutive years since 2003. In its 2005 edition, the contest was estimated to have drawn a global audience of two billion. Miss World has raised millions of pounds for charities around the globe under the banner of its 'Beauty with a Purpose' programme, and is credited with directly influencing a dramatic increase in tourism in Sanya, home to Miss World for the past three years, the statement said.

» There They Are, Miss America Judges

By Anne Becker -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/18/2006 7:19:00 AM

Miss America may have moved to cable after ABC passed on it, but broadcast TV, and ABC in particular, will be well represented at the pageant. In fact, the new host will provide a show-long plug for ABC's top program. James Denton, hunky Mike Delfino on Desperate Housewives, will play the Bert Parks role this year, while Housewives narrator Brenda Strong,  who competed in the 1980 Miss America pageant as Miss Arizona, will be a judge, as will Jerry Rice, ex-football star and current contestant on ABC's Dancing With the Stars. Also representing broadcasting on the judging panel will be Malcolm in the Middle star Jane Kaczmarek and veteran syndicated TV talk-show host Leeza Gibbons, joined by fashion commentator Robert Verdi, R&B artist Brian McKnight and Miss America 1985, Sharlene Wells Hawkes.

The show airs Saturday, Jan. 21, at 8–10 p.m. on CMT (Country Music Television). The pageant, which has been in Atlantic City since its inception in 1921, will be in Las Vegas this year at the Aladdin Resort & Casino. In June, CMT, a Viacom-owned network, picked up the rights to run the pageant in 2006 and 2007, with an option through 2011. ABC, the pageant’s most recent broadcaster, decided not to renew its contract with Miss America after the 2004 broadcast pulled in a record low 9.8 million viewers.

» Miss Daytona Beach USA Pageants

January 13-15, 2006

Daytona Beach USA kicked off this pageant doubleheader weekend as The Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center hosted the fifth edition. Pageant Director Kim Decker and A2 Productions heads one of the original six preliminary pageants and constantly leads the pack in creativity and production. It is also the only three day preliminary on the calendar so that the delegates can experience a near state pageant like experience. This year saw a three day pageant weekend in Volusia County as it all kicked off Friday Night with personality interviews with the judges. The delegates and judges first are introduced with contestant speeches and then they get to know each other with one-on-one interviews.

Then the delegates competed in Saturday Nights Preliminary Show. With all of the delegates onstage in the swimsuits and evening gown phases of the competition, this is the evening the delegates were selected as finalists. They all looked wonderful as the audience cheered their every move. Host Barry Kramer and hostess Meg Perkins (Miss Daytona Beach USA 2006) kept the energy up as the preliminary competition ended with the delegates waving to the audience in their evening gowns as the curtain lowered.

The curtain rose again Sunday evening as it was finals night at Miss Daytona Beach USA. It started with a high-energy opening dance production number staring our delegates. With the near capacity audience on their feet Mr. Kramer and Ms. Perkins welcomed them and it was time to greet the ladies during self-introductions. Then Miss Miami Teen USA and pageant choreographer Kendra Waller was introduced and spoke of her fun both at Miss Daytona Beach USA and Miss Florida Teen USA where she finished 4th runner-up! This was greeted with great applause. Then it was time to announce the six finalists in the Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA Pageant were announced: Riley Seegert, Kayla Conatser, Heather Elwell, Stephanie Chambers, Melissa Goldberg, and Chelsea Rhoden. The eight Miss Daytona Beach USA finalists were: Brynn Pratts; Jacquelyn Bick; Stephanie Belknap; Miranda Weber; Amanda Zitzman; Jennifer Kamps; Alexandra Palmer and Ashley Pannagio.

The preliminary scores were erased and the finalists then competed once again in the three areas of competition. The first impressions of the finalists were the onstage interviews conducted by Ms. Perkins. As the ladies sat on stage at a table with our hostess it was time to see their abilities to dance on their feet. The second phase of the competition was swimwear of the delegates choosing as the parade of contestants was led by Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA 2006 Erin Winters. The final competition was Evening Gowns as paparazzi and fans greeted the contestants onstage as they walked the red carpet.

Before the results were announced it was time to pay recognition to the special award winners as well as Miss Amity and Miss Photogenic in both categories. The winner’s Miss Amity were Kayle Hayes while Miss Photogenic was Riley Seegert in the Miss Teen USA division and Amanda Zitzman in the Miss USA Division. The People’s Choice winners were Melissa Goldberg and Ashley Pannagio. These winners qualify for the state pageants later this year in Hollywood.

Then it was time to announce the winners first in the Miss Daytona Beach Teen USA division:

» Tampa Bay Super Pageant

January 15, 2006

The second half of great pageant weekend saw Citrus Productions present the fifth annual Miss Tampa USA at the Tampa West Shore Doubletree Hotel. Three titles in both the Miss USA & Miss Teen USA divisions for the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater were on the line. Tampa is one of the original six preliminary pageants in our state. Sunday’s competition saw twelve delegates competing for the Miss Teen USA titles and twenty delegates in the Miss USA division. Up first was Miss Nature Coast Teen USA Camden Collins doing a lovely upbeat rendition of Amazing Grace.

Then the delegates opened the pageant with a dance number with the ladies hitting the runway with matching black pageant shirts and slacks of their own choosing. The Teen USA contestants were followed by The Miss USA contestants as the competition started immediately as the one minute self introductions were part of the judged competition. Complete with the help of Miss St. Petersburg Teen USA 2006 Brenda Orcutt and Miss Clearwater USA 2006 Julianne Pruitt all of our competitors sounded fantastic.

After introductions it was time to meet the hostesses for the evening Jennifer Norah and Miss Florida USA 2006 Cristin Duren. While the delegates were changing into swimwear the audience was introduced to several of the Miss Florida USA family as both prelim directors and titleholders were aplenty! Amongst those in attendance included Miss Nature Coast USA Shilah Goodwin, Miss Nature Coast Teen USA Camden Collins; Miss City Beautiful USA Deanna Pollina; Miss Orlando USA Chelsea Zedar and Miss Kissimmee USA Jessica McLaughlin who all looked great in crown and banners.

Next was the swimsuit preliminary competition. The delegates were presented in one or two-piece suits of their own choosing. The swimsuit winners were Logan Mass in the Teen USA division while Kylie Erret won in the Miss USA division.

Then it was everyone’s favorite competition, Evening Gowns. It was fashion on parade as the gowns in the pageant were fierce! This was one tough competition. Once the competition was completed it was time to announce the winners in the Miss Tampa Teen USA Division. The first awards were presented for Peoples Choice and the winners were Logan Mass (Teen USA) and Danielle Dolen (Miss USA) as voted on by the audience. Then the photographers voted on Miss Photogenic and the winners were Morgan Fehr (Teen USA) and Justine Llanes (Miss USA). Finally the Pageantry Spirit Award Winners were Brandy Wines (Teen USA) and Brittany Thomas (USA). These award winners are now eligible for the state competitions.

After the ceremonial final walk by Miss St. Petersburg USA 2006 Brenda Marie Orcutt and Miss Clearwater USA 2006 Julianne Pruitt. Then it was time to announce the results starting with The Miss Tampa Teen USA division.

For information on competing this year email Ms. Meyer at pageantdirector@hollywoodjaycees.org.

“This pageant is a wonderful opportunity for a young lady to represent our beautiful city in a variety of community service events and activities.  We are very proud of our current and past titleholders who continue to be role models for their peers and those in our community,” states Jules Meyer, Miss Hollywood USA 2007 Pageant Director.

The young ladies competing for the MIss title must be between the ages of 18-26 and between the ages of 14-18 for the Miss Teen title, depending on when their birth dates fall.  The young ladies will be competing in three areas and all are judged equally.  The three areas of competition include interview, swimsuit and evening gown.  This year’s Opening Number is entitled “Pretty in Pink” where delegates will choose their favorite pink and white outfits and will have the opportunity to make self-introductions in front of the enthusiastic audience. In between the competition segments, the audience will be delighted by entertainment from local Hollywood performers. The winner of both the Miss and Miss Teen categories will win a variety of wonderful prizes including their entrance fee paid to the state competition, personal training sessions, teeth whitening, custom jewelry, and of course, a sash and crown, among other incredible prizes donated by local Hollywood businesses.

In addition to the Miss and Miss Teen titles, the delegates will be competing for the titles of Miss Congeniality, which is voted on by fellow delegates; Miss Hospitality, which is based on ticket and ad sales; Miss Photogenic, which is determined by our Official Pageant Photographer, John LaMarche; and the People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by the audience members. This year’s pageant is generously supported by the Hollywood Beach Marriott and the Hollywood Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (Beach CRA).  A photo shoot will be held on the beach and at the hotel in mid January, with the delegates visiting various beach locations along the way.

“It is a pleasure for the Hollywood Beach CRA to join forces with community-minded organizations such as the Greater Hollywood Jaycees,” said Beach CRA Executive Director Gil Martinez. “The pageants’ emphasis on the achievements and community spirit of our local youths make it a very worthwhile event, and one that will draw more attention to our extensive, ongoing revitalization efforts in the CRA District. We at the Beach CRA are thrilled that the pageants have chosen beautiful Hollywood Beach to hold their wonderful event and we’re excited that an even wider audience will be introduced to all this unique seaside community has to offer.”

Get More Than You'd Expect
With The Matador

We liked Pierce Brosnan as sexy, slick super spy James Bond, but we've been hungry to see him take on other roles outside that tuxedo. Thankfully, his new film The Matador satisfied our craving.

The Matador centers on the unlikely friendship of Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) a professional hit man suffering an identity crisis and Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) a businessman with troubled finances. Set in Mexico City and the California exurbs, The Matador is not your run of the mill action thriller, but an amusing character study. Our man Brosnan turns in a very convincing and highly entertaining performance as a sleazy, pudgy hit man. It's a joy to watch Pierce take on a role, which is the exact opposite of 007. Julian Noble has none of Bond's futuristic gadgets or beautiful women and certainly, a lot less class.

The Matador is more like Sideways than a straight up action flick like Die Hard. Considering its superb comic fastballs, plot twists, and Brosnan's stellar performance, we're pulling for Bronsan to win a Golden Globe this year. Wouldn't that be nice?
