PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

» Viva Miss America: Back and in Vegas

By Olivia Barker, USA TODAY

Johnny Grant, center, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, poses

with the 2006 Miss America contestants Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006,

in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles

Despite three major changes this year - a new channel (cable's CMT), city (Las Vegas) and date (Jan. 21, 8 p.m. ET/tape-delayed PT) - the show is looking back, tipping its tiara to the Bert Parks era. Gone are attempts to give the 85-year-old institution a modicum of modernity: the jeans-heavy casual wear competition, the game show-like civics quiz and the American Idol-style talent face-off.

"When people see the Miss America Pageant, they want to see the Miss America Pageant," says Art McMaster, acting president and CEO of the Miss America Organization. "They don't want to see all these games and gimmicks." The quiz show was considered too cruel ("A disaster waiting to happen," McMaster says), and the casual-attire segment lacked razzle-dazzle.

So there she'll be, beaming in her state sash, last seen draping gowns and swimsuits in the late '80s. She'll tap-dance or tumble on TV; the top five, rather than the top two, showcase their talent this year. The 52 contestants also will elect a Miss Congeniality, an honor last awarded in 1974, well before any of this year's contestants were born.

But perhaps the most vigorous nod to the show's highly rated roots is that producers are trumpeting the spectacle as the Miss America Pageant with a capital "P" rather than the Miss America Competition. "Being on CMT gives us the freedom to acknowledge that, because our audience is by and large not a cynical audience," says Paul Villadolid, vice president of programming and development for CMT, a significantly smaller home than the pageant's previous venues.

The country-crooning cable channel averaged 324,000 prime-time viewers last year; ABC's final September 2004 broadcast drew a record-small audience of 9.8 million, down from 33.1 million in 1988. CMT viewers "believe in these stories of small-town girls, underdogs, who achieve success," Villadolid says. "And to us, that is the underlying theme of Miss America."

Harking back to the show's crinolined past also is meant to mollify the anxieties of "die-hard, core Miss America fans," Villadolid says. "The great fear was that we would somehow countrify the pageant." The host, in fact, is a star on the network that dropped the pageant: James Denton of ABC's Desperate Housewives.

Still, a traditional tone does not mean a return to matronly maillots. The MissAmerica.org home page spotlights a photo gallery of smiling contestant’s largely in plunging necklines. "We're not producing an old-fashioned show," Villadolid says. "We're really placing traditional values in a contemporary production."

» Ex-Tomboy Now Miss Oklahoma USA

By Chris Schutz / The Oklahoman

NORMAN - A young Norman woman who grew up to be a contestant for the 2006 Miss USA title said she didn't spend her childhood dressing Barbie dolls in sequined gowns and high heels. "I was kind of a tomboy," said Robyn Watkins, 24, an elementary education major at the University of Oklahoma. Among her favorite playthings were Transformers -- toy vehicles that transform into robots.

Competing in beauty pageants was "something that I never thought I would do," Watkins said. A friend had encouraged her to enter the Miss Oklahoma USA pageant several years ago. The first time was "kind of addictive," and she ended up in the top five, Watkins said. The second she was in the top 12. After that, she took a year off from competing so she could spend more time preparing.

For this year's pageant, her third, she collaborated with Norman formal wear designer Kayne Gillaspie on her dress, which featured a sheer flesh-tone bodice decorated with lavender and amethyst lace and rhinestones. The full-length skirt was made of a leopard-print silk in the same colors.

Watkins competed Dec. 18 against 28 other young women at a pageant in Norman for the Miss Oklahoma USA title. April 21, one woman from each state plus one from the District of Columbia will compete for the Miss USA title in Baltimore. The new Miss USA will compete in the 2006 Miss Universe pageant later this year.

Before the Norman competition, Watkins said, she hit the gym six days a week and tried to stick to a modified meal plan. "I didn't really consider the things I was eating before," Watkins said. Her boyfriend encourages her to stick to her "chicken and rice" meals and her workout schedule, she said.

She credited her older sister with helping get her through the pageant process so far. "She helped me the most of everybody," Watkins said. "I forgot a lot of things." Watkins said her previous two pageants helped her gain confidence. "I think confidence kind of shows on stage," she said.

However, "I'm still kind of the girl who sits in the corner unless I have to speak up," she said. Things have gone pretty smoothly so far, except for the day Watkins was supposed to be in Tulsa for a photo session and she forgot to take her crown. Winning the state-level contest means she's put college on hold. She had been on track to graduate in May, but still has to do a teaching practicum.

Each Miss USA contestant has to commit three weeks to preparing for the pageant in Baltimore, Watkins said. "I don't think there's a school that would allow me to miss three weeks of that," she said.

Sneak Around
New Kicks With Serious Style

You're headed to the gallery opening. Dress shoes are too much, and you want to exude a casual cool vibe. What to do? Take a peak at our designer sneaks and be sure to put your best foot forward.
For those who like to stick with the high end of everything, try out the Converse Limited Edition by John Varvatos ($95.00), a Chuck for those of us over 18. Absent of laces, but with perfectly distressed canvas and red piping, it's a shoe that screams style and whispers rebellion.

Ready to kick around in the ultimate of foot gear? Get into a high top with Godheadzilla denim sneakers by Evisu ($110). While these shoes are as well constructed as an Air Jordan, they also come with a detailed inside lining, simple graphics and an urban warrior's thick rim.

Need something more classy, less street, but still original? Try! out the Le Coq Sportif Escrime ($84.95). With it's soft leather and white template, the Escrime is the perfect play off of the classic fencing shoe. We love its light weight, clean lines and unisex ability.

Sneakers aren't just sneakers anymore. They've got the power to make or break your next outfit.
