» MISS TOURISM INTERNATIONAL REPORT: Beauties get a taste of Malaysia

By ELAN PERUMAL

THE 36 participants of the Miss Tourism International 2005 had a brief experience of life in a typical village during their half-day visit to the Kampung Ulu Chuchuk at Sepang on Christmas Day.  Their visit to the Banghuris Homestay village was received with the beat of kompang drums and a bunga manggar procession.  As they got down from a tour bus, the contestants of the Tourism World Final were introduced to state Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Lim Thuang Seng and other VIPs. They were then treated to some of the popular local delicacies such as lemang, satay and ice kacang.

Tapioca and banana chips that are produced at the village also received overwhelming response from the beauties, with them digging into their purses to buy the foodstuff.  Most of the contestants got acquainted with the taste of the food items that were served hot and prepared there and then. They were enjoying the food so much so the organizers had to virtually stop them from eating. “Don’t mistake this for lunch,” said a member of the organizer in jest.

“The ‘ice cream' was delicious,” said Miss Tourism of Spain Carla Cabrera Alterachs referring to the ice kacag. After the refreshments, they attended a mock Malay wedding, which gave them the opportunity to participate in the customary rose water sprinkling ceremony. Each of them was also presented with boiled eggs in accordance with the Malay custom of acknowledging their wedding guests with a gift. The atmosphere turned lively as some of the contestants including Lim and other guests then dance the joget with the local dancers. The visit to the village ended after they were served traditional buffet lunch. “We enjoyed the food, the culture and the friendliness of the people around here,” said Slovak Republic’s Janka Genlichova, who is studying for her PhD in Economical Engineering at a university in Czech Republic. A lot of the locals also took the opportunity to take pictures with the contestants who were ever ready to pose for camera.  Lim said the Miss Tourism International pageant had contributed in further promoting Malaysia to the world. “These contestants will return to their countries with fond memories of Malaysia and I’m sure they will promote our country in their homeland,” he said.

The Selangor Tourism Action Committee, which was responsible for organizing the visit, also got the contestants to plant mango saplings at the village. The saplings carried the label of the countries they were representing.  Besides the visit, the committee also organized fishing and a visit to the Bagan Lalang beach in Sepang, tour of the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah state mosque, and the Selangor Islamic Arts and Craft Centre in Shah Alam before they were treated to a seafood dinner at a restaurant, at the Shah Alam Lake. The event is organised as part of the efforts to promote goodwill, friendship and international tourism among contestants and to further cultivate international cultural exchange. The international pageantry is in its 10th year with Malaysia playing host. Beauties from 36 countries including Singapore and Malaysia are vying for the Miss Tourism International 2005 title. The grand coronation will be held on Dec 31 at the Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel Grand Ballroom. Tai Thong Group of Restaurants is the official restaurant for the 10th Miss Tourism International 2005 and the sponsor for the Miss TT Personality title. The pageant is organised by D’Touch Promotion Sdn Bhd.

» Originality pays off in North Carolina Teen USA

MARK PRICE/Charlotte Observer

Melissa Gayle Lingafelt is the second Charlotte area teen in two years to win the Miss North Carolina Teen USA pageant, making her a contender for Miss Teen USA in August. She's 15, lives with parents Ken and Miki in Concord, loves to sing, and claims without a hint of pretense that her goal in life is to get a driver's license. We recently caught up the 10th-grader by phone to discuss how the victory changed her life and why she's having so much trouble with her driving tests.

Q. How did you react when they called your name as the winner?

My body was reacting, but winning wasn't really registering. I stood there with my hands over my mouth, crying. I was numb on stage and all these people started flocking to me, with the crown and the banner and the flowers. It was organized chaos. I'm still pinching myself.

Q. Have you been given any indication of what exactly the judges liked about you?

They did tell me. My wardrobe did stand out. I picked it myself, which is different. With many of the others, their mother picked it. My interview outfit looked kind of like a Buccaneer. I wore a black jacket and white lace ruffled shirt, with blue jeans and black velvet boots that came up to my knees. I got them on eBay. I love pirates and pirate movies like "Pirates of the Caribbean," so I wanted to reflect that. There was no outfit like it, and it was a lot of fun to pick out. They (the judges) also said they had a great time talking to me in the interview.

Q. What did you talk about?

There were 96 girls in the pageant and when the others talked about their ambitions, they told the judges they wanted to win an Oscar, go to college, go to Europe, that kind of stuff. Mine was to obtain my driver's license. I happened to fail my learner's permit test...the driving part with the instructor. I had to keep going back because he didn't think that I was ready to face other cars on the road without his supervision. When I talked about it at the pageant, the judges were laughing so hard, they were crying. I love to make people laugh, and I was kind of a ham on stage.

Q. How many times did you fail?

Ahhhhhhh, well, let's just say more than once. I was nervous! I had this thing where I would put on the brakes every time a car passed me on the road. I was terrified that cars passing me would come over in my lane. It freaked me out. Plus, the instructor had to use his little (passenger side) brake a lot. I'd get to a stoplight and I'd be thinking the car would stop automatically for me. I had this thing, too, about not wanting to turn my head to see if there was a car in the other lane. Obviously, I did not belong on the interstate.

Q. How many contests have you been in?

I started when I was 12, in Little Miss Cabarrus County. I'm not sure how many I've been in. Probably a couple of dozen. I've won several. I was really sweating Miss North Carolina Teen, because there were so many beautiful contestants.

Q. Are people treating you differently since you won?

The people that have always been my friends remain my friends, but I have a lot of new friends who have latched on. It's all right. You just have to be careful, because you know they are not being your friend because of who you are.

Q. What else has changed?

I already have appearances lined up, part of it working with Special Olympics. I'm already preparing for the national pageant, too. I'm picking out clothes and working with a personal trainer to stay fit. That I'll be competing live on national television for Miss Teen USA hasn't sunk in yet, but more and more people keep reminding me.

Lose Yourself

In Mazarin's Music

What makes a band truly "good?" For us they must be first-rate musicians, create memorable songs and be able to carry a tune. That's why we're for Mazarin. This band is a triple threat.
Unlike any record we've heard lately, We're Already There consumes the ear with rich vocal harmonies, loving lyrics and a decidedly mellow vibe. It's beach blanket, indie rock with a touch of electro. The first track, "New American Apathy", is full of syncopated drums that perfectly mesh with tingling bells and a drowsy bass line. Meanwhile, lead singer Quentin Stoltzfus' pleasing, 1960s style vocals lead you over layers of honeyed guitars and what might be a harpsichord. It's the Beatles, White Album meets The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds plus a touch of The Kinks thrown in for good measure.

This Philadelphia quartet is just plain "good". So sit back and escape into the cheerfully dreamy and completely complex melodies of Mazarin.
