PAGEANT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

» Beaumont Girl Wins Miss America Teen Pageant

By TRAVIS REED/Associated Press

Phelan M. Ebenhack / Associated Press

Meghan Miller, 17, of Beaumont, waves to the crowd

as current Miss America, Deidre Downs, crowns Miller as

Miss America's Outstanding Teen Saturday in Orlando, Fla.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 17-year-old Texas girl who plays three musical instruments and is an accomplished ventriloquist won the inaugural Miss America's Outstanding Teen competition Saturday night. Tears streamed down Meghan Miller's face as Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs crowned her on stage. The blue-eyed blonde aspires to get degrees in accounting and corporate law and become an attorney.

The Beaumont, Texas, teen outlasted 52 girls, aged 13 to 17, who were vying for the honor after winning preliminary pageants in their states, the District of Columbia and Virgin Islands. She also won a talent award for performing a ventriloquist act where she negotiated between two dolls carrying Walt Disney tunes.

Miller said she was inspired to learn ventriloquism after watching a pageant contestant perform an act when she was just 3 years old. Now she uses the method to speak in schools. "I sat in front of the mirror for hours on end trying to figure it out. I started performing at 7, and I've been going strong ever since," she said.

'NSync singer Joey Fatone and Downs co-hosted the event. Contestants from California, Utah, Washington and Florida rounded out the top five. As the winner, Miller will travel the country over the next year as an Outstanding Teen ambassador promoting education, volunteerism and healthy living.

Categories included talent and a private interview, both heavily weighted against evening wear, casual wear and lifestyle and fitness competitions. There was no swimsuit competition. Each teen also had her own platform issue, covering a spectrum of concerns from anti-tobacco campaigns to disability awareness, mentoring, food banks and Internet safety.

Miller's platform was "Hop on the Bus with R.E.S.P.E.C.T." — a character education program for youths. The pageant was not televised this year, though organizers hope it will also find a home on CMT, the new carrier for the main Miss America pageant after decades on ABC. They also hope the junior version of the event held in Atlantic City since 1921 will stem years of declining viewership — which hit a record low 9.8 million last year.

» THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD:

Miss Weston Teen USA - August 21, 2005

The South Florida USA family was in the house

to support the new pageant on the block!

The Miss Florida Teen USA season officially ended the 2006-year in the pageant crazy city of Weston Sunday afternoon. The Western High School Auditorium was the site for the inaugural Miss Weston Teen USA Pageant. Produced by Katty Pulido International the ten Miss Weston Teen USA delegates competed for the chance to represent the booming international city of Weston. Up first it was the contestant introductions in their “fun in the sun” outfits that were swimwear with wraps. The delegates hit the runway first as the crowd was very appreciative. This was the first time the judges saw the young ladies onstage. It was clear that this was going to be a great pageant evening. The swimsuit competition was first as the delegates wore one piece matching white suits with white wraps. Then it was everybody’s favorite the evening gown competition. After both competitions the delegates returned onstage for comparative judging with the entire cast. After a latin hip-hop act wowed the ladies in the audience it was time to select the top five finalists.

These women have qualified to compete at state this October:

Leilany Gonzalez

Daniela Delfino

Camila Gonzalez

Krizia Toledo

Anyelin Orellanes

The finalists returned onstage for one last chance to make an impression on the judges with the interview questions. Each delegate drew a question at random from her fellow contestants. Miss Weston USA Rebecca Linemon who co-hosted the event asked the questions and the delegates had to think on their feet to answer.  Now all was left was to announce the special prizes and announce the finalists. Once again these winners are qualified for state: Miss Amity is Gina Benitez and Miss Photogenic is Melanie Grawzo. Then the final announcements were made:

4th Runner Up is Camila Gonzalez

3rd Runner Up is Leilany Gonzalez.

2nd Runner Up is Anyelin Orellanes.

1st Runner Up is Krizia Toledo.

The New Miss Weston Teen USA is Daniela Delfino!

ST. JUDES HOSPITAL HOLDS A MISS USA FASHION SHOW!

Miss Florida USA 2005 Cristin Duren joined more than 25 pageant titleholders from across the country on August 20 to model the latest fashions for the second annual St. Jude Beauty Queen Classic Luncheon and Fashion Show. Ms. Duren, along with 20 other contestants from the Miss USA pageant and Miss USA Chelsea Cooley, was asked to attend the event to support St. Jude by Donald Trump, star of The Apprentice and owner of the Miss Universe Organization.

"This year's event was like none other with the appearance of Miss USA, courtesy of Donald Trump," said Helen Wood, event chair. "This was the first time that 20 other state Miss USA titleholders united since the crowning of Chelsea as Miss USA. It is great they are reuniting to benefit such a great place, St. Jude."

Nearly 500 guests were treated to a champagne reception and lunch with the opportunity to bid on numerous items during the silent auction. In addition, a 2005 BMW Convertible provided by Roadshow BMW, a baby grand piano provided by AMRO Music and a diamond necklace by Kay Jewelers were put up for bid during the event's live auction. The event raised nearly $40,000 to benefit St. Jude, including $10,000 from the Memphis Charitable Foundation founded by Pat Kerr Tigrett.

Special guest model, St. Jude patient Jessica Turri, joined the pageant titleholders on the runway. The 17-year-old was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, in 1997. She received chemotherapy treatments at St. Jude for more than two years. Jessica is currently cancer-free and is a senior in high school.

Prior to the Beauty Queen Classic event, a number of the pageant titleholders came to St. Jude on July 14 for a day of make-up and dress-up, giving some patients a taste of being beauty pageant hopefuls.  Ms. Durren participated in the day's activities, which included a walk down the runway. She also visited patients again on August 19.
